Whale watching

As of June, the humpback whales for a size from 15 to 18 meters (Megaptera) come from water of the South Pole and join Sainte-Marie island per hundreds. They are let approach easily thanks to their sociable and merry character which appears by spectacular jumps. They come to give the life and to be coupled in the channel of Sainte-Marie, at a little distance from coasts. The ideal place is protected by the East coast from Madagascar and the Sainte-Marie island. They will remain four months in the area - time for the whale-calves to grow - before turning over in the South Pole waters to stuff themselves with krill.

In August 2001, a whale-calf was born at only 50 meters from Lodge which is used as base camp of the international association for protection of  the Cetaceans, Megaptera. It was baptized " Bora Princess " by the scientists. A homage for the team and hosts mobilized for the protection of the whales in Madagascar.

Princesse Bora Lodge organizes a unique whales safari in Madagascar with scientists who surround you. For better understanding of the fabulous world of the whales and is process of disappearance.

Whales safari at Princesse Bora Lodge   Go close to the whales ...

With scientists, you will use a boat to go meet the humpback whales.
The Eco-guide specialist who come with you will answer all your questions, during and after your whales safari.

You will take an active part by observing the Cetaceans which come here to mate and give birth to the world renowned whale-calves, just a small distance from the coasts.

The boat will approach those enormous Cetaceans laterally to not frighten them. Once arrived at approximately 100 meters of the whales, the boat will stop and turns off its engines.
At this time the observation begins.
The whales approach intrigued while passing under the hull and by making rotations on themselves offering the opportunity to observe them and to take pictures.

After return, in the evening, you will exchange with the scientists your observations. Your observations (sounds, behaviors, description) will be analyzed, studied and filed in a world bank of data in order to better know these animals, which are so close to human.

Highlights of whales watching:
Meeting with the whales and active participation in the scientific program of observation and protection of the whales, Megaptera.
Understand the world of the whales.

Duration: Half or full day.
