Lamu Island

Remote and dreamy.

Set in an archipelago of coral fringed island, swaying palm trees, multi-colored birds, scents and aromas of spices known and unknown, the muhadeen calling for prayer, children singing in the Madrasas, braying donkeys, wheel barrels needing a severe oiling rolling along cobbled streets, a friendly call to Ahmed  and a world of other strange sounds all echo a melody that describes Lamu.

A trading town for hundreds of years between Arabia and India buying and selling spices, ivory, mangrove poles has produced a wonderful and vibrant culture and people known as the Swahili.

Transportation on Lamu today is still by foot, donkey or dhow. There are no cars on the island

Baytil Ajaib, meaning the House of Wonder, an 18th century palatial townhouse with only two rooms and two suites, meticulously restored by the proprietors Norbert Herget and Paul Weaver invites the discerning traveler to a world in and around Baytil Ajaib that will enraptures all your senses.
